Zana's Hammerhead Shark News

Zana caught this hammerhead shark all by herself while fishing on her family's boat near Maraetai Beach in the weekend. She brought it in for news because she thought the children would really like to see a real hammerhead shark not just a photo.
Some of the children were brave enough to touch the shark... eeww it was slimy when you rubbed it one way and prickly when you rubbed it back the other way!
Oh and it was a bit smelly!
Did you notice that it’s eyes are on the side of its head? Freaky!!
Check out the photos!
This shark's unusual name, hammerhead, comes from the unusual shape of its head.  A hammerhead shark uses its wide head to trap stingrays by pinning them to the seafloor. The shark's eye placement, on each end of its very wide head, allows it to scan more area more quickly than other sharks can.
